Working with users to redesign your services

27 September 2017

With a whole track dedicated to understanding users, UX, and usage at ILI this year, we asked one of our expert speakers, Kenn Bicknell, why it's so important to work with users to redesign our services and understand usage.

Kenn Bicknell, Digital Resources Librarian, Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority: "It is critical to work with users in regularly reassessing library products and services.  Across all types of libraries, users are no longer just information consumers.  Users are often engaged in knowledge creation as well.  Libraries are increasing opportunities for students, scholars, and the general public to share their thoughts, ideas, research, and expertise in a variety of ways.  Library OPACs now allow readers to comment on or rate particular works.  Libraries (along with other cultural institutions) are incorporating crowd-sourced metadata into both descriptive terms and searchable features.  And citizen scholars are provided with opportunities to promote their own work alongside that of subject experts on a growing number of research portals.  When considering how best to regularly reassess our success in user-centred focus, there is value in not just prioritising the user first in interface considerations, but the increasing role for users in creating, collecting, preserving, and providing access to all of human knowledge."

In Trend spotting and the future of engagement, Kenn reflects on recent societal and business trends that are impacting us all, as well as how innovative libraries are responding to them.

Other sessions and case studies in the Users, UX & Usage track include: User-driven space planning, Learning from user experience, Transforming a traditional library, Putting usage data to work, and Users and you: the best user-focused resources Phil Bradley has found. Hear from speakers from JISC, UK, University of Portsmouth, UK, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, USA, University of Hull, UK, Helsingborg Public Libraries, Sweden, Luton & Dunstable University Hospital, UK, and more.
