International Triumph for Internet Forum
Judging by the high level of international representation at its 4th event, INTERNET LIBRARIAN INTERNATIONAL continues to enjoy its reputation as an influential meeting place for the global library and information community. The European sister event of the highly successful US-based Internet Librarian series took place at London’s Olympia last month and attendance figures reached almost 1400, with 43 countries represented. Welcoming over 80 speakers alongside the conference delegates, exhibitors and exhibition visitors – including cross-over visitors from next door’s London Book Fair - the Show’s UK manager, Jean Mulligan of Information Today said: “The reception this Event continues to receive each year, worldwide, reflects the information industry’s continued requirement for instruction and education on the vast range of contemporary web-based tools and techniques. Once again the conference co-chairs, Jane Dysart and David Raitt, along with their steering committee have ensured that the programme was both content-rich and pertinent to issues facing today’s information departments as they struggle against budgetary restrictions and an increased demand for services.”As well as 3 full days of conference presentations, Internet Librarian International also played host to a full day of pre-conference workshops and visitors to the associated exhibition benefited from a series of brief how-to presentations by many of the conference speakers. Librarian International to assist with major industry launches…..
Internet Librarian International 2002 (18 – 20 March 2003, London), Europe’s major forum for web-based information resource users, is to provide a platform for two new industry bodies to announce their activities. The unification of the UK’s Library Association and Institute of Information Scientists will create a new body from 1 April 2002, to be known as CILIP: the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals. Tim Owen, who will be CILIP’s Head of External Relations, will address the Internet Librarian International 2002 conference and outline the aims and activities of the new body. He commented, "CILIP represents a vital step forward for everyone in this profession, marking the recognition that there is a great deal more joining our various activities than separating them. Technology - and particularly the levelling of the playing field brought about by the rapid development of the Internet - has had an important part to play in this joining-up. Especially when taken alongside the London Book Fair, Internet Librarian International is an excellent forum for us to explain the benefits that the creation of CILIP will bring."In addition, Renardus – the EU-funded web-based information discovery service for academic users – hopes to showcase its operational service during Internet Librarian International. “From a single entry-point, Renardus users can search or browse descriptions of thousands of hand-picked Internet resources held in subject gateways across Europe.” Said Lesly Huxley, Renardus’ Dissemination and Support Manager,Internet Librarian International 2002 takes place from 18 – 20 March at Olympia 2 in London and the expansive programme is published this week. (Copies available from E: info@internet-librarian.com) The conference’s associated exhibition is open on 18 & 19 March and once again shares a reciprocal agreement with London Book Fair, allowing visitors to pass freely between the two concurrent exhibitions. The
future for the book trade?
A management seminar examining current and future trends for the global book trade takes place on Wednesday 22 March at Novotel London West, during London Book Fair week. The Book Trade in 2010 full-day seminar examines the immediate future for the book trade via an innovative scenario-based programme, and has secured the participation of many leading personalities from the publishing industry. Hugh Look, one of the Seminar developers, comments "The book trade is in the throes of the most startling and all-embracing revolution. The next 10 years will see a real response to recent trends: the consolidation of media ownership and marketing channels; the rapid growth in online booksales and the development of e-books; and the challenges posed by print-on-demand to traditional techniques, to name just a few." "These developments, and many others, will bring new players to the industry and disenfranchise companies that rely on old skills and relationships, possibly for ever. This seminar has been developed specifically to plan for these changes and position your business accordingly." The Seminar features three panel sessions, presenting responses to the scenario from panels of publishers, booksellers, authors, and agents. Panellists include: Alan Buckingham
- (Managing Director) o DK Online
The seminar is developed and led by senior publishing consultants Mark Bide, Hugh Look, Mike Shatzkin. In short, anyone involved in distributing the printed word, by whatever medium, to a readership. Presentations by over 80 international speakers ensured that the first European edition of this highly successful US event comprehensively covered issues for today's cyber library and information centre. In his keynote address to Conference, Arts Minister Alan Howarth CBE MP discussed Government plans for public library networks and the National Grid for Learning, and congratulated the Show organisers on the launch of such an innovative new information forum. The parallel LIBTECH Exhibition was attended by over 80 exhibiting companies, some 2817 visitors and many of Europe's most influential library and information media. At close of Show over 30% of this year's space had already been reserved for next year, when Libtech International moves to Level 2 of Olympia 2 to cater for growth. Tom Hogan, President of Information Today Inc, the Event owners, said "We are delighted with this European launch of Internet Librarian International. Libtech
International to benefit from major conference
Information Today, Inc., a USA-based publisher and conference organiser, has announced that it has acquired Libtech International, the UK's leading library technology exhibition. Information Today will run an international version of its highly successful Internet Librarian Conference in parallel with Libtech International on 29 - 31 March 1999 at Olympia in London, alongside the London International Bookfair, the established publishing event run by Reed Exhibition Companies. The synergies between this major library technology exhibition and the increasing focus on electronic publishing within the Bookfair, teamed with a conference programme addressing topical library issues, promise to be an irresistible draw for librarians and information managers. Internet Librarian '97 and '98 conferences held in Monterey, California, drew audiences of over 2000 technical librarians and information professionals. Libtech International was developed by the University of Hertfordshire over 13 years ago from an internal training course to the major event it is today. But with 100 exhibitors and up to 2000 visitors, it completely outgrew the space available on the University's Hatfield Campus. The London International Bookfair is the most important event in the European publishing calendar, attracting more than 23,000 visitors and exhibitors and with media attendance comprising over 450 journalists from TV, radio, newspapers and magazines. Mike Allsopp, of Reed Exhibitions UK, said: "Our major aim in this new partnership with Information Today is to create a synergistic link between the London International Bookfair and Libtech. The addition of the Internet Librarian Conference to the programme recapitulates this message and adds yet another dimension to the overall event.Information Today's Internet Librarian conference and exhibition, launched in 1997 in California, is the company's third annual event covering library and information technology. The National Online Meeting, held each year in New York and celebrating its 20th anniversary in 1999, and Computers in Libraries, an annual event in Washington, DC, are the other two conference and exhibitions hosted by Information Today. The company is also the leading U.S. publisher in the field, with Information Today, Link-Up, Computers in Libraries, Searcher Magazine, and MultiMedia Schools among its offerings. Tom Hogan, president and co-founder of Information Today said: "Information Today brings some 20 years of experience in the field of library and information science to a venture that will give information professionals an efficient and fulfilling experience in an area of momentous change. We are excited with the prospect of working so closely with the London International Bookfair and honored that we have been given the opportunity to continue the fine tradition established by the University of Hertfordshire."Both the Internet Librarian Conference and Libtech International 99 will be co-managed in the UK by Information Today and Information Today Ltd, an event management company with extensive first-hand knowledge of the library and information management field. The company's event portfolio includes the annual City Information Show, an exhibition for financial information services suppliers. - ends - Editor's
